Need To Buy A Used Heavy Duty Truck? Tips To Help You Buy The Right One

Posted on

The trucking industry is booming and heavy duty trucks are high in demand. If you are planning to purchase one of these trucks for yourself, it is important that you find one that is in great condition that will work well for you. This is especially true if the truck is used. Below are some tips that you should find helpful when you start shopping for used heavy trucks to ensure you do not waste your money.

Maintenance History

One of the most important things to keep a vehicle running well is the proper maintenance. Ask the truck owner to show you the maintenance records. These records will show you how they treated their truck. For example, if they cannot show you proof that oil changes were made when they should be, then they likely did not do this. Make sure the records are up to date. You should also make sure to ask them if they had any accidents in the truck. If so, ask them to show you the paperwork showing what damage was done to the truck and how it was repaired.

The Engine

Having the right engine in the truck is a major factor when choosing one. You need to make sure the truck has the right amount of towing capacity and horsepower to move your loads. For example, if you only tow small equipment you will not need as much horsepower as drivers that haul very large items at long distances.

Quality

The quality of the heavy duty truck is also a factor. Make sure the engine is in good condition, as well as the body of the truck. Look it over for rust, Surface rust is okay, but structural rust is not. If you see any rust, scratch it with your fingernail. If you see the paint below the rust, then it is surface rust. If you cannot see the paint, then it is structural rust. Check for rust around the truck, as well as underneath the truck. You also need to Inspect the seats, rear, and cab to make sure they are in good condition.

The best thing for you to do is to hire a mechanic to look over the heavy duty truck for you. They can make sure everything is in good condition. They can also help you determine the right amount of horsepower you need if you do not know how to do this.
